Diamonds,love and money the guide!

Diamonds,love and money the guide!
Welcome again dear readers.First of all let me clarify that i ain't by no means a diamond expert, but today i had a conversation with a friend of mine, and she was thinking about her diamond engagement ring and her wedding and that made me do my research for today,so to help her and you dear reader.

While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes to the "clarity metric" the higher its value.
First of all let's define what clarity is.

According to my research,Diamond clarity is the quality metric of diamonds that relates and grades the existence and visual appearance of internal characteristics of a diamond called inclusions, and surface defects, called blemishes. The fewer inclusions(a.k.a "internal characteristics") and blemishes the diamond has, the better the clarity grade.

So what causes these inclusions?
While the diamond forms small crystals are getting trapped inside the diamond while it’s forming, thus this makes asymmetries in its atomic structure and this creates tiny cracks that make a diamond appear whitish or cloudy.

The grading system, how diamonds are valued.

The GIA grading system as known as the Gemological Institute of America grading system

There are other grading systems but I will use this one as an example, from the Best rank which is Flawless to the "worst" which is Included.
  • Flawless (FL) No Internal characteristics and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Flawless is near perfection.
  • Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification only small blemishes on the diamond surface.
  • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) those diamonds have Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification no point to trying to check them with your naked eye. From my research on the matter it seems that that the inclusion size is in relation to the size of the diamond that means that a 4 carat diamond can be much more visible than a 1 carat diamond.
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) the Inclusions are a bit difficult so see and the grader needs to put effort to spot them under 10x magnification, but the general characterization passes as minor, however, some VS2 inclusions may still be visible.
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are easy to check and see under the 10x magnification.
  • Included (I1, I2, and I3) Those Inclusions are super obvious under 10x magnification which might typically impact the brilliance and the transparency of the diamond.

Some useful tips

Clarity Tip:The bigger the diamond(carat weight)the flaws are more detectable.
2 CARAT DIAMONDS : A VS2 or higher a clarity grade helps your as a buyer to avoid any signs of visible inclusions.
2 between 1 Carat: The inclusions in SI1 clarity grade or better are not visible to the naked eye
1 carat : Clarity is the least important from Color and Cut .
Generally speaking the difference of 10% or less in a carat weight will be very difficult to detect visually.

Cuts that help you hide hide inclusions ;)

  • Choose: SI1 or SI2 for Marquise Cut, Princess Cut, Oval Cut, Radiant Cut,
    Cushion Cut, and Pear Shaped.
  • Choose: VS2 for Emerald Cuts, Baguettes and Asscher Cuts.
  • Choose: VS2 or SI1 for Heart Shaped Diamonds.
  • Choose: VS2 or SI1 for Round Cut Diamonds that either they are under 1 carat or over 1 carat

Save money with following:

Clarity grade : Lower it up to VS2 before making further “compromises”,usually a Vs1 Vs2 will look like a flawless diamond to the naked eye, exception is that if you like near perfection go up to VVS2.
The SI1 range in clarity : the inclusions don’t impact the appearance of the diamond to the occasional viewer. This clarity range exchanges a higher cut or color grade. The combination of this often results in a beautiful diamond the imperfections are detectable only when someone checks it up close and personal you might say The same goes for diamonds that are under 1 carat, and are SI2 grade. Now if your diamond is over 1 carat clarity plays a good role and it is of importance, because in SI2 it’s easier to detect inclusions

Generally when you buy a diamond you first choose to lower it’s Clarity, then the Color ,then the Cut and lastly it’s Carat.

If you buy a treated diamond, find one that comes from a famous lab.Treated diamonds look awesome but there is an impact in the stability and value of the stone.

Always check the certificates for the diamonds in question.

  • Do not purchase a diamond over $2,000 unless it is GIA certified, also avoid diamonds certified by a GIA trained gemologist this is because the person/s might work for the jewelry shop and thus maybe the owner of the shop has them under pressure so not loose their jobs.

  • Note the location of the GIA inscription on your stone so you know where it is and notify for it your jeweler. Compare your diamonds inclusions with the markings on your certificate so you know where they are so the next time you come to take your diamond back from your jeweler it will be the same stone and not a phony one.If the diamonds value is super high then have an independent appraiser to appraise it and put in writing his findings thus when you call him he can fast check your diamond to see if it is the one !

  • Ask the jeweler to compare that color grade of the diamond to his in-house master color set and ask him to show you the guarantees in writing, some of them don’t include for example, the loss of the stone.
  • Cut quality affects the brightness, and therefore perceived color of a diamond.

  • Always ask to see the diamond in normal lighting and not under spotlights.

  • Always ask for the exact carat weight, and the price per carat and always ask for GIA Grading Report of the said diamond.
